Review - Jack and the Beanstalk at the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch
Jack and the Beanstalk at the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch is a vibrant, actor musician triumph, with the talented cast driving the energy from start to finish. The cast’s limitless ability shines as they seamlessly swap instruments, turning musicality into part of the storytelling itself. Special praise goes to the two delightful sheep and the scarecrow, who doubles as the musical director, keeping the show’s rhythm sharp and the audience grinning throughout.
Dame Trott lead a strong cast bringing classic panto warmth and wit, anchoring a production that’s as well paced as it is heartfelt. The staging is slick and choreography is smartly crafted, showcasing instruments in motion while propelling the narrative with real flair. The set design is nothing short of phenomenal, transforming the stage into a magical world that feels both playful and expansive, the Giant is particularly memorable as is the rainbow splashed finale. The charming Pat the Cow steals scenes with ease, proving an undeniable audience favourite.
The original songs are a standout feature, bursting with personality and spanning an impressively wide range of styles and motifs. Each number feels fresh yet cleverly familiar, thanks to cheeky nods to well known musical and theatrical favourites woven subtly into the score.
A wonderfully staged, musically rich, irresistibly fun production. The definition of perfect festive theatre for the whole family.
