Guide

First-timer's guide to the theatre

Everything you need to know before your first trip to a show.

What should I wear to the theatre?

There is no dress code. Most people wear what they would to a nice dinner, though smart casual is fine everywhere. Layers help, as some theatres run warm.

When should I arrive?

Aim for 30 to 45 minutes before curtain up. Doors usually open 30 to 60 minutes before the show, and late arrivals may be held until a suitable break.

How long is a typical show?

Most West End shows run about two and a half hours including an interval of 15 to 20 minutes. Check the running time on each show page.

How do I choose seats?

Stalls are closest to the stage, the dress circle is often the best view for value, and the upper circle is cheaper but further away. Some seats have a restricted view; ask when booking.

Where is the cheapest place to book?

Book through the theatre or a licensed seller. Compare face value prices before you pay, and avoid unofficial resale sites. Our show pages link to London Theatre Direct (affiliate links).

Can I take drinks and food in?

Most theatres let you take interval drinks to your seat from their own bars. Outside food is usually not allowed.

What about accessibility?

Many theatres offer step-free access, captioned, audio-described and relaxed performances. Contact the theatre before booking so they can hold the right seats.
