With film adaptations flooding the West End in recent years, it is exciting to see a dark satire taking the stage — let alone one that stars such a talented company. Steve Coogan plays multiple roles with the kind of surgical precision that only a performer of his calibre could manage, switching characters mid-scene with barely a breath.
Armando Iannucci's adaptation captures Kubrick's absurdist horror while finding fresh angles on material that somehow feels more relevant than ever. The production is technically impressive and the cast are uniformly excellent. If three stars feels underwhelming given the talent involved, it reflects a slight sense that the material never quite catches fire on stage the way it does on screen.
